Bright steel products have special characteristics with regard to shape, dimensional accuracy and surface finish. The bright steel is obtained either by peeling on a peeling machine or by drawing on a drawing bench. Bright steel is usually in the form of round, flat, square or hexagonal bars and is supplied in drawn, peeled or ground condition. Bright steel is used for mass production in the automotive and mechanical engineering industries.

This dimensional standard replaces the previous standard EN 10278:1999. A revision was absolutely necessary as the dimensions and limit dimensions were included in the standard EN 10277:2018 for the steels listed there and have therefore been removed from the application of EN 10278. The scope of this standard is therefore limited to stainless steels and special steels that can be supplied as bright steel products, e.g: Tool steels and bearing steels. The following further changes have been included in the standard:
- Surface quality classes and tolerances have been revised;
- this standard can now also be used for cold heading steels in the form of bars and wire;
- the deviation from straightness has been revised.
